In the 21st century, climate change presents increasing challenges, with extreme weather conditions being one of the most significant. Heavy rainfall often causes flash floods, which, unfortunately, can lead to landslides that threaten the safety of people and property. Due to its specific geomorphology, Bosnia and Herzegovina is often affected by such natural disasters, with human factors further complicating the situation.
When a landslide is activated and threatens to destroy a family home, a quick and effective response is crucial. In one such case, experts were faced with the challenge of saving a home from destruction. It was necessary to urgently build a retaining wall to prevent further soil movement and ensure stability.
The ideal solution chosen was to build a retaining wall using concrete lego blocks. These blocks proved to be the fastest and most efficient solution. The construction used 60 concrete blocks, resulting in a massive structure of about 150 tons of concrete, which successfully stopped the landslide and saved the house.
Versatile Use: Concrete Blocks in Rehabilitation and Prevention

The flexibility of concrete lego blocks has proven to be key in other areas as well. These massive blocks were not only used for a permanent retaining wall but also served as temporary road barriers. In situations where a landslide threatened a road, they were quickly installed to secure the passage and protect drivers from further collapse.
Furthermore, concrete blocks are indispensable in the later stages of road rehabilitation. Thanks to their modularity, they easily fit into various configurations, allowing for quick and effective reconstruction of damaged sections. Their weight and durability guarantee long-term stability, preventing future collapses and ensuring traffic safety for the long run.
Advantages of Using Concrete Blocks for Landslide Rehabilitation
- Fast and simple construction: Concrete lego blocks allow for extremely fast construction of a retaining wall without the need for complex building techniques.
- High stability and load-bearing capacity: The weight and shape of the blocks ensure exceptional stability, which is crucial for stopping landslides.
- Cost-effective solution: Compared to traditional methods, retaining walls made of concrete blocks are often a more economical choice.
- Durability and resistance: Concrete is a material of exceptional durability, resistant to weather conditions and mechanical damage.
Special thanks go to our partner Vi Beton who donated all the necessary blocks to the humanitarian organization pomozi.ba. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the pomozi.ba organization itself for organizing the entire action and for their exceptional dedication to helping those in need in Jablanica and the wider region.
